There are two masterpieces there and neither are new to the cinema: All about Eve and The Conformist. Other notable classics are Badlands, Brief Encounter, Great Expectations and Ikiru. The best new releases are Waltz with Bashir, There will be Blood, No Country for Old Men and 4 months, 3 weeks and 2 days. The Dark Knight is the best of the popcorn fodder.
I agree in general with your comments although I think there could be more masterpieces than just those two you mentioned. When I check it I will know.
