Review: The Handmaiden

Wow. Just wow. This film has to be Park Chan Wook’s masterpiece. It’s like everything he’s made before has been leading up to this film. Whilst I enjoyed Stoker, one always had the feeling that working in a foreign language was cramping his style. Here he’s back working in his native language and his style has free rein to go where few film-makers dare to go. What a film. I think this has to be the first truly great film I’ve seen at the cinema this year.

What a great film. This is certainly Park’s most polished piece of work. There are some excellent films coming out of South Korea at the moment. If Sang-ho Yeon takes inspiration from the Handmaiden then we may be seeing some kinky zombies in Train of Busan 2.

I want to see it. I loved his film Oldboy. This is the only film I have seen where the onscreen information guide says, “Warning! This film contains language that some viewers may find offensive together with live octopus ingestion.”
