There is no place like HOME

My favourite cinema is HOME in Manchester. As a longstanding visitor to The Cornerhouse (HOME’s predecessor) I was actually grieving its demise a couple of years ago, thinking nothing could be as good. How wrong I was! Now it’s a case of “what was Cornerhouse”?

So where do I start? There are five screens so two more than Cornerhouse which means more choice. More choice means more varied programming which means I’ve increased my filmgoing exponentially. And expanded my filmgoing horizons like never before. Directors such as Roy Andersson, Wojciech Has and Aleksei German have been revelations to me. And the opportunity to see the 13 hour Out 1 was a once in a lifetime event. And then there is improved sound and more comfortable seats. What’s not to like? Well, ok, to prove I’m not getting paid for this, one tiny thing, which is that now people are allowed to bring alcohol into the cinemas. Being a non-drinker, the smell of alcohol occasionally drifting past my nostrils can sometimes distract, but that’s a minor point. So full marks to HOME!

    1. Hi Sarah, The films I’m most looking forward to seeing in the near future are the Egyptian film Clash, Woody Allen’s Manhattan (one of my favourites) and also the Fassbinder season – I want to see as many of them as possible because Fassbinder is one of my blind spots and I think it’s time to redress the balance. Is it ok if I create a link to HOME on the blog?
