An Unwritten Law of the Film Universe, number 3

Why is that when you see people going to bed at night in a film, that after they put their bedside light out there is often still a faint patch of light over them which means we can still see them? Surely there should be complete darkness? I mean, when I put the light out at night out I never see any random patches of light……..
